Spokane Stress Busting Secrets: 10 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 75-90% of all doctor visits are stress-related.

On top of that list, researchers and the AIS say that every part of the body is affected by chronic stress and that stress can play an aggravating role for almost any disease.

This is frightening! So what now? We cannot possibly all become hermits to avoid or rid ourselves of all the stressors in our lives.

No one can avoid all stress, but you can counteract it’s affects by learning how to evoke the relaxation response to bring your system back into balance. So your best defense is to integrate healthy stress management and  de-stress strategies into your daily routine. Schedule a set time once or twice a day to de-stress. Your body and health will thank you down the road.

1. Meditate. 5 to 10 minutes of quiet reflection can bring some relief. If you’re having a stressful day at work, close your door and meditate or go for a quick walk to clear your mind.

2. Exercise. Thirty minutes of physical activity per day helps both body and mind. If you have an hour lunch break at the office, use half of it for a walk or a jog. Make plans with a coworker to do this a few times a week.

3. Hobbies. Take a break and do something you enjoy.

4. Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Get adequate rest, eat right, exercise, limit your use of caffeine and alcohol, and balance work and play.

5. Share your feelings. Don’t try to cope alone. Let friends and family provide support and guidance.

6. Be flexible! Whether you’re at home or at work,
arguing only increases stress. If you feel you’re right, stand your ground, but do so calmly and rationally. Be prepared to make allowances for other people’s opinions and to compromise.

7. Don’t be overly critical. Remember, everyone is unique and has his or her own virtues and shortcomings.

8. Laugh. If you’re laughing, it’s hard to hold on to stress. Your facial muscles get a natural workout that relaxes them.

9. Try Yoga or Tai Chi. Both come with benefits of stress relief, muscle tension relief, improvement in flexibility and joint mobility, while strengthening and toning muscles.

10. Get a Massage. A massage provides deep relaxation and as your muscles in your body relax, so does your overstressed mind.
