Part One: Understanding Spokane Stress

Stress:

1. Physiology. a specific response by the body to a stimulus, as fear or pain, that disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism.
2. physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension: Worry over his job and his wife’s health put him under a great stress.
3.
a situation, occurrence, or factor causing this: The stress of being trapped in the elevator gave him a pounding headache.
???Synonyms 8. anxiety, burden, pressure, worry.

Spokane stress comes in many forms — rush hour traffic, construction detours, Spokane Road Work detours, that pending deadline at work, trying to sell your home in the failing Spokane housing market, getting the kids to the numerous Spokane sporting events in the area, and any number of other stressors. The medical definition of stress is somewhat of a hot topic. There have been many different definitions of what stress is, whether used by psychologists, medics, management consultants or others.

Hans Selye’s (one of the founding fathers of stress research) view in 1956 was that ???stress is not necessarily something bad ??? it all depends on how you take it. The stress of exhilarating, creative successful work is beneficial, while that of failure, humiliation or infection is detrimental.??? He believed that the biochemical effects of stress would be experienced regardless of whether the situation was positive or negative.

How you deal with stress will have a direct impact on how you feel both mentally and physically. Stress can raise your blood pressure, increase your heart rate in a less than positive way, and even cause hair loss. The simple, gut reaction is to go to your doctor and talk him or her into prescribing medication, which does work. However, there is a far better choice to treat your stress, that has long lasting effects, and may decrease or even eliminate your dependence on prescription medication.

Exercise and proper nutrition can have a wondrous affect on your stress level. Learning how to maximize your time to be the most efficient you can at home and work will enable you to eat better and allow time for you to dedicate to exercise and maybe even relax!
In this series of articles, we will focus on how to deal with and beat Spokane Stress with exercise and proper nutrition.
