Spokane Healthy Living Tips

Many people think of the oldest old as frail, confused, and living in nursing homes, but that stereotype doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.
In fact, research suggest that the oldest Americans aren’t the sickest, but rather those who have stayed healthy the longest. Most centenarians stay mentally sharp and able to take care of themselves into their 90s. About 15 percent still have no age-related diseases by age 100, other than perhaps arthritis, vision problems, or hearing loss.
There’s no doubt that some people are born with more luck than others in the genetic lottery. However, research indicates that only about 20-30% of individual variation in life span is due to heredity. That means at least 70% is due to differences in lifestyle and environment.
Science has proven that many of the chronic diseases and leading causes of death can be prevented or at least controlled, often through simple lifestyle changes.
The following ‘best practices’ can improve your chances of living not only longer, but also healthier.
Here are the Spokane Healthy living tips:
· Eat a Balanced Diet low in saturated fats and rich in fruits and vegetables to have a positive impact on health conditions commonly seen in advancing age.
· Maintain a Healthy Weight to reduce the risk for the diseases of aging.
· Stay physically active. Engage in regular exercise, including endurance and weight-bearing exercises. Physical activity will improve your health, physical functioning and quality of life.
· Increase intakes of Vitamin D to reduce the risk for all-cause mortality, Calcium for healthy bones, B Vitamins to support healthy DNA replication, and antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamins C and E to address oxidative stress and cellular aging.
· Avoid harmful habits. Quit smoking, and avoid excessive alcohol.
· Connect with others. Research has shown that nearly all centenarians have meaningful relationships and a strong support system.
· Keep a positive outlook. Centenarians endure their share of hardships and losses, but personality tests indicate that they have the emotional resources to weather stress. In general, centenarians tend to be emotionally stable, calm, adaptable, and seldom depressed. Follow their lead, make time each day to relax your body and calm your mind.
