Choose the Right Food Portion for Your Body during Spokane Bootcamp

How do you choose the right food portion so you can loose excess weight and not overeat at the Spokane Bootcamp?

Measuring your food is not an easy task to do. Not many people actually take the time to measure out how much they eat each meal. You can read labels on packaged foods and try to count your calories but so many times a person actually will eat 2 or 3 times what the label says a proportion is. For instance, your ice cream label says it’s only 150 calories per ½ cup serving. I know I’m guilty when I take 1 ½ cups instead. All of a sudden instead of a simple 150 calorie intake, I just raised mine to 450 calories for 1 large and pleasurable serving of my favorite treat!

So many of our everyday portions have grown in the last 20 years from what they used to be.

The Big Gulp

  • Remember when the 7-Eleven Big Gulp was introduced in 1980 and how everyone was amazed that you could buy a drink that big? It was 32 ounces back then, now you can buy a 64 ounce Super Big Gulp that’s comes in at twice the size at the original.

Coffee to go

  • Over 20 years ago before the idea of the latte stand, a cup of coffee would generally come in a 7oz Styrofoam cup. Add some sugar and cream and it averaged around 85 calories. Now a coffee drinker expects at least a 16oz version made mostly with milk which can top 480 Calories depending on the drink ordered.

Chips

  • Two decades ago a small pack of chips was just around an ounce and was around 150 calories. Now most packages are either 1.8oz containing 250 calories or 3.5oz containing 500 calories.

Flavored milk

  • Chocolate milk used to be sold in 10 oz. bottles and was about 220 calories 20 years ago. Now the average serving is around 20 oz containing a mere 440 calories.

Soft Drinks

  • 20 years ago is was normal to only get a 12 oz can of soda from a vending machine containing 160 calories. Nowadays it’s more common to find machines dispensing 20 oz bottles with around 245 calories each.

No wonder we have such a weight problem in so many developed countries. Consumers are constantly tempted with larger and larger portions. When I’m served a smaller portion, the first thing that comes to my mind is that I’ve been gypped. Perhaps we think we are getting more for our money if our plate is piled higher or there are more than 6 appetizers on the platter.

The game plan is to make more money. If the portion sizes are larger, the company can increase the price of the items. The larger size would entice the consumer to spend more money which causes the companies profit margins to increase a lot while other company expenses only increase slightly. We’ve all seen this. Why would you buy a 6 inch sub sandwich for $4.00 when you can buy a foot long sub for $6.00? Who can resist a “bargain?”

The cause and effect of this scenario – the larger the portion consumed, the larger the number on your bathroom scale.
