Escape From Spokane Diet Food Hell With These 6 Simple Steps
Wednesday, March 11th, 2009
Eating better or dieting, sounds easy as it rolls off the tongue but actually doing it? That is the tough part.
Dredging through Diet Food Hell is something that I hate. I don’t dislike it, it is not that it is merely inconvenient, I hate it!
It is confusing, time consuming and complicated. You almost need a PhD in nutrition and chemistry to figure out what to eat and what not to eat.
What is healthy? What is not? What is good for you today causes cancer tomorrow. Low fat, low carb, no carb, low sodium, fat free, non-dairy, no taste, no fun! ARRGG!!!
I have found that the best way to escape from Diet Food Hell is to not go there to begin with. Let’s face it diets don’t work.
Anything that you do that you cannot fully incorporate into your everyday lifestyle on a permanent basis is not going to help in the long run. You may lose the weight but as soon as you go back to old habits your old body fat makes its comeback too.
Escaping from Diet Food Hell
So how do you escape from dieting hell anyway? Easy, don’t diet. Yes I said it, do not diet. Make life changes.
You see, the simple answer is that if you want to change how your body looks and feels and works then you need to change what you are doing. You must make a lifestyle change if you want to change your life.
Change is easiest started by going back to basics. As a counselor, when people get off track from where they say they want to be I remind them to go back to the basics. When an athlete’s game is off the coach goes back to the basics.
Now, you are off track with your weight and health. So create change by going back to basics.
The Basics to Eating Instead of Dieting.
-
Pay attention to what you put in your mouth. Food is fuel so choose the best fuel to energize your body and mind. You only get to consume a limited number of calories a day so make them count.
-
DRINK! Water, that is. Drink lots of water throughout the day. Avoid soda and juice (unless you are juicing as meals but that’s a different story) they contain tons of sugar and empty calories.
-
Don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. Take smaller portions, use a smaller plate and what ever you do, do NOT biggie size anything! The more food you have in front of you the more you will eat. I can still hear my mom’s voice “Clean your plate, there are starving children in Africa that are not so lucky!” So don’t even go there.
-
Wait 10-15 minutes after eating a meal before going back for seconds or having dessert. Chances are you will not be hungry after letting your meal settle a few minutes.
-
Do not totally deny yourself eating pleasures. Hey you gotta live right? Life with out chocolate is not a life worth living. Just keep it in check, in moderation. You don’t really need that pint of Ben & Jerry’s. However a scoop served in a custard dish from time to time will not hurt.
-
EAT! Eat often. Eat small portions throughout the day. It keeps the metabolism fires burning and prevents binge eating.
Time To Make Real Change
Are you ready to make a change, real change in your life for your health? Don’t fall for the fad diets and gimmicks. Change your life and your habits for good. Incorporate permanent changes into your lifestyle.
When you are ready to make health a habit, remember to get the right coach. Zach Hunt, personal trainer and owner of Phyzique Personal Fitness in Liberty Lake can help you make permanent changes to your life and help you escape from Diet Food Hell.
