Are You Sure You Should Drink That?
Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
When my brother and I were younger and in football at the same time, there was one meal that we both enjoyed and always felt good afterward. It consisted of 4 hot dogs each with ketchup and sour cream and we shared a gallon of milk between the two of us and finished it all.
Now I certainly don’t advocate that now. But there’s a point to this, is milk a good source of calories / nutrients, is fruit juice a viable option?
There’s more to your calorie intake than just what you eat.
Have you ever considered what you drink also? Can you drink as much as you want, when you want, without any ill effects?
Well, yes if you’re only drinking water, but when it comes to a number of many other calorie laden drinks, that is most certainly not true.
I first was alarmed by this when I was doing some research for a magazine article coming out next month. Now I don’t drink any alcohol, so I had to do a lot of the research on mostly alcoholic drinks, vodka, margarita all that.
I knew there were a lot of calories in many of the alcoholic drinks, but the one that really surprised me was the margarita. The one specific variation had over 800 calories in a single serving. That’s a good number, and possibly half of your calorie intake.
This gets even more interesting, when I came across a study touting the problem with liquid calorie consumption.
Here’s what it said:
“The researchers examined the relationship between beverage consumption among adults and weight change and found weight loss linked to a reduction in liquid calorie consumption. Liquid calorie intake had a stronger impact on weight than solid calorie intake among the 810 male and female subjects recruited from Baltimore, Baton Rouge, Durham, N.C., and Portland, Ore. The results are published in the April 1 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”
Now the important part of this study is when is referenced that most the drinks were sugary / alcoholic drinks.
I’m certainly not against milk, coffee and some other wholesome beverages. But when it comes to fruit juices, high-sugary alcoholic drinks, you’re probably better off with water.
You can’t go wrong by skipping out on alcohol. You save the calories and save the brain impairment.
When in doubt go with water…
