Role-Model Parents -Healthy, Active Kids!

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Being a healthy, active, role-model parent to your children is a blessing! Take the opportunity to help them learn great habits. From the earliest smile of a newborn to the way kids choose to spend their time, children are constantly imitating their parents. But things have changed since we were kids!

Children today face staggering statistics. According to results from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES,) more than 64% of US adults are either overweight or obese, a 14% increase from just 15 years ago.

With so many health problems stemming from obesity, fitness and nutrition are some of the most important life’s lessons we can teach our children. But how can we be sure we are conveying the right message?

Teaching children the importance of nutrition and exercise and the joys of good health begins at home, with your own choices.Be a great Role-Model. Get started now!

  • role-model-parents-grocery-shopping1Choose to shop well! Grocery shopping for healthy food that tastes great is a good start. Let your kids read labels with you, ask them to help you find foods that are high in fiber, low in fats, and have higher nutritional value. Offer positive feedback for good choices. Did they pick out string cheese? Point out the calcium values. Did they pick chicken? Point out the higher protein.

  • Choose to exercise! Make time for your own personal fitness program. Physzique offers incredible, total body workouts in short periods of time. Make your own health a priority. Let your kids know that you have set aside twice, or three times a week to work on your health and fitness exclusively. If it is important to you, your kids will learn to value their own personal fitness. Besides, your own good health leads to a long and happy life with your family!

  • Choose to play together! One of the best things about living in the Spokane Valley is the variety of sports and activities geared toward children. Think soccer, skiing, swimming- there are opportunities for everyone. But don’t just drop your kids off at practice, get involved! Choose to spend your time with them, as a coach or a volunteer. How you choose to spend your time will greatly affect how important an activity is to your child.

Offer plenty of support and encouragement in a positive environment. Don’t just tell them that fitness and nutrition are important, show them! Provide plenty of fun opportunities for active play, and don’t be afraid to join them. When they see you having fun and being active, your kids will get the message. Enjoy every moment with your children, they are only little for a little while, but don’t forget to take good care of your own healt, and get started with one of the best personal trainers in Spokane, Zach Hunt at Physzique.
