I’m Finally Coming Clean….

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

I admit, I don’t eat perfect all the time. I’ve even been known to clean out the fridge at times =) (one particular week on vacation I gained 37 pounds).

The real secret to getting and staying in great shape is consistency, not short bouts of perfection. Even 80% on track consistently is a great start.

So if you eat 4 times a day - that’s 28 meals a week. That gives you 5 meals to be less than perfect and enjoy your meals to an extent.

You can certainly be better than 80%, especially as you get leaner, but hey 80% is definitely better than 0%. See how it’s done here Spokane Fitness Success

Spokane Fitness Tips: Making Food Look & Taste Good

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

I just got these pictures from a client. The food looks great and I’m sure it tastes great as well. Not only that, all the dishes are also healthy. Take a look:

Deciding In The Moment

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

You are at your friends house along with several other buddies and it is getting to be time for your next meal. Your friend decides to order pizza while you are out back chatting with the others. When it arrives the pizza is set out on the counter. You come inside to a counter full of pizza and they look extremely cheesy and they are covered with all your favorite toppings.

The next thing you know you start to justify why you need this pizza and start to contemplate whether you actually should just dive right it. There is a good chance that you will cave into that temptation without any second thoughts.

The Solution

This one can be very hard to deal with. If you go throughout your day seeing what comes your way there is a good chance that something unexpected will pop up. From the previous example you might not have expected that you would be faced with an array of pizzas tormenting your will power. You need to decide at the beginning of the day that everything that you put into your mouth is going to benefit you and bring you closer to your goals.

Pre-plan what you will have throughout the day and if anything deviates from what you had already planned you can easily reject it. You don’t even have a choice to eat anything else during the day because you have already decided that you will eat healthy. Start your day off with a good breakfast and you are on your way to a healthy day.

Spokane Fitness Tips: Do You Know How Much You Eat?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

There was a recent report on ABC news about how people grossly
overestimate how many calories they burn. This is also true for
people underestimating how many calories they eat.

Let’s See…
Less calories burned from exercise
+ More calories from food
____________________________________
More calories that stay with you (around your body)

A quick example, this month being National Oatmeal Month, let’s use
that. When most people eat oatmeal they have a nice generous bowl,
which can add up to 400-500+ calories if you not watching.

Then add, orange juice, toast and butter and you’re nearly at 1,000.

Even if you measure out the oatmeal your likely to make a mistake.
1 serving size is 150 calories 1/2 cup. Most people I know scoop out
a heaping size which is actually nearly 1.5 times the serving size.

Even if you level out the cup to perfectly even that is still about
1.15 times the serving. You have to be about .5 inches below the actual
serving cup line.

Peanut butter is another example. I won’t even get into that one, 1
serving size is about 180 calories, you can easily double that without
thinking, just put more onto that table spoon and count it as 1 serving
size.

Okay, here’s my point, make sure you track your food and know how much
you actually eat. If you need to for the first week or two, figure out
how many calories and grams of each macronutrient are in the typical
foods that you eat.
