Spokane New Year’s Resolutions - Alternatives for Spokane Weight loss
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009Kicking off a New Year in Spokane, many folks begin by creating resolutions, figuring that with each Spokane New Year, there is a prime opportunity for a Spokane New Start. As much as I hate to admit it, with my past Spokane New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve always failed – I’ve always been a quick fix kind of person, and in dealing with my health via fad diets and exercise schemes, I’ve only experienced failure. Finding that those quick fixes hadn’t worked, year after year, I decided to kick off this Spokane New Year’s Resolution by looking at other Alternatives for Spokane Weight Loss.
One thing that keeps popping up in the back of my mind is an ad that I’ve seen for Bariatric Surgery – now, I have to wonder is this a viable Alternative for Spokane Weight loss? The billboards for Holy Family’s program seem to taunt me – First off – A Happy Woman on a Scale. Is this even feasible? I’m pretty sure it isn’t. Even when I weigh myself and see that there is a loss, I’m still grumpy because I have so much farther to go before I reach my goal. Aside from that, definite “results” are promised. The prospect of surgery however, makes me nervous. Regardless, I felt that it was imperative to check the requirements for the surgery through my health insurance.
Looking into the surgery itself, I found the following criteria must be met for an individual to qualify:
• A BMI of 50 or greater
OR:
• A BMI of 35 or greater with a myriad of weight-related complications (osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, diabetes, cellulitis and non-healing ulcers, etc)
So, to break it down in simpler terms: For a 5’6” Spokane Resident, that means that one would need to weigh at least 220lbs – that would give that Spokane Individual a BMI of 35.5 (found at www.freebmicalculator.net/bmi-chart.jpg). To actually be considered for the Spokane bariatric surgery, one has to actually complete a year long program where 10% weight loss is reached and maintained! So much for a short term Spokane New Year’s Resolution!
For a 5’6” Spokane someone weighing 220lbs, if 10% of their weight were lost, it would put them down at a BMI of 32.3, which would subsequently and drastically reduce their need for the surgery. Quite honestly, as an Alternative to Spokane Weight Loss, it would be prudent to stick with a healthy diet and exercise program, and not subject the body to such a drastic surgery (which has documented side effects such as nausea and vomiting, dehydration, food intolerance, changed bowel habits, cold intolerance, and the real kicker – excessive flatulence!).
So – a solution for a much more pleasant Spokane New Year’s Resolution: Modify your diet to include (again, based on a 5’6” female at 220lbs) 7 ounces of Grains, 3c Veggies, 2c fruit, 3c milk, and 6oz lean meat and beans. This would put someone at about 2200 calories daily, per the food Pyramid, and with 30-60 minutes of activity would allow for “moderate weight loss.” It’s not so hard to modify a diet, but finding the right exercise plan can be tough – working with a personal trainer to develop lean muscle and provide overall body tone is the best option to take here, to really guarantee that results will be what your Spokane New Year’s Resolution is calling for.
