Riverfront Park Spokane—A place to play for the whole family!
Friday, August 14th, 2009A 100 acre park in the middle of downtown Spokane, Riverfront Park offers lots of fitness activities and recreation for kids and adults right next to the spectacular Spokane Falls. So whether you live in Spokane or are just visiting, the park can provide the focus for a day of active fun for everyone followed by calmer, cool-down activities.
Riverfront Park “Active” Activities

Take the little ones, and the adventuresome big ones, to the Red Wagon, a climb-on sculpture dedicated to the children of Spokane. The Red Wagon looks like a giant Radio Flyer that can hold 300 people! The handle is a slide, so climb up and slide down….again, and again, and again.
For more active fun action, try the Ice Palace, the
outdoor skating rink, open from October through March. Here, all members of the family can skate seven days a week. Rates are reasonable and lessons and rentals are available. So get ready to start work on your triple axel! Or, maybe a little backwards skating, pair skating, or just around and around and around.
Riverfront Park has paved trails for walking, running, skating, or biking. Pick your mode of travel and follow the trails to cross and re-cross (and re-cross, and re-cross) the Spokane River for many views of the falls and the river, which are breathtaking in the spring no matter what your mode of travel.
The Spokane Sculpture walk, extends from the Monroe Street Bridge to the Washington State University Riverpoint Campus, mostly within the park. Seventeen sculptures from a variety of artists in different styles can give you breaks for resting and stretching if you decide to jog the route. Run-stop-stretch-admire, run-stop-stretch-admire, etc. Or, it gives you an interesting path to follow on your walk. Walk-pause-admire, walk-pause, admire, etc.
Riverfront Park “Cool-down” Activities
After you’ve explored the active activities of Riverfront Park, cool down with a ride on the historic 1909 Looff Carrousel. There’s room for everyone with 54 horses, 1 giraffe, 1 tiger, and 2 dragons. You’re going around and around and around again, but this time astride the beast of your choosing.
Mini golf’s another calm but fun activity at the park where you can play 9 or 18 holes in the delightful Enchanted Forest. Let’s see: putt, putt, putt, putt…..
Don’t miss the SkyRide gondola ride over the lower falls. You may be sitting, but it can be pretty exciting, especially March through June when the falls are at their max. The gondola cabins protect you from the spray and any wild weather, but give a great clear view of what is an amazing amount of beautiful crashing water.
Be sure to save the best for last when you are all totally exhausted with the ultimate cool-down activity—a movie. The five-story IMAX Theater can take you to the Amazon or to Transformers. On a big screen unlike any other!!
Riverfront Park activities are great to do with the whole family, but it really takes more to get that body to be what you want, and the weight to be where you want it. Let Zach Hunt give you the extra punch (figuratively!) with great workouts at Physzique, the Liberty Lake fitness club. Give Zach a call when you are done playing at Riverfront Park.
