Spokane Stress Busters: PART TWO - Building a defense against Spokane Stress
;
The way we live our lives can have a huge impact on the way that we experience stress. Living a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the stress level in your life and make you more resilient and help you cope with major stressors in your life. Adopting a health lifestyle means that you can concentrate better, have more energy, and increased stamina. Starting with the proper diet and nutrition plan is the best foundation for a health life.

Carbs, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals are all important for energy, mental concentration, and emotional stability, as long as they are eaten with moderation. Excess in any area is never a good thing. Stress can increase your body’s needs for certain nutrients, and when you are lacking in any nutrient your immune system is weakened, and you are more likely to fall ill. Eating a healthy, well balanced diet you will stay healthy even in times of stress. If you eat mostly fast food that is high in fat, sodium, and calories, you will very likely feel more run down and sick during stressful times. Daily vitamins and supplements can be beneficial but are no replacement f or a healthy, balanced diet.

A balanced dietary guideline for a healthy diet is one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products; Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars. The FDA food pyramid for the average adult indicate a daily healthy diet consists of at least 3 ounces of whole grain bread, cereal, crackers, rice or pasta, dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, dry beans and peas, a variety of fruit (fresh, frozen canned or dried) with limited amounts of canned fruit juices, with most of your fat sources from fish, nuts, and vegetable oils, and limiting solid fats like butter, stick margarine, shortening and lard, drinking low or fat free milk (if you can’t drink milk make sure to get your calcium from lactose free items), and eating low fat or lean meat and poultry that is baked, broiled, or grilled, and vary your protein choices with more fish, bean, nuts, peas, and seeds.

You’ve always been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But did you know a healthy breakfast can help with weight loss? A 1992 study at Vanderbilt University found that women who changed their diet to include breakfast lost 28% more weight over a 12-week period than women who skipped their morning repast. In addition, a full 78% of the 3,000 people enrolled in the National Weight Loss Registry, an ongoing tally of adults who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for more than a year, describe themselves as breakfast eaters.

The U.S. Government’s Dietary Reference Intakes recommend that added sugars not exceed 25% of total calories (to ensure sufficient intake of micronutrients). And while there isn’t a specific guideline for cereal, it makes sense to aim for a cereal that gets 25% or less of its calories from sugar. (If the cereal contains dried fruit, this could be a pinch higher.) Adding fresh or dried fruit of of own is even better.

Bottom line: start your day off right with a healthy breakfast, eat a healthy, balanced diet through out the rest of the day and you have the best foundation for defense against Spokane=2 0Stress.

Part One: Understanding Spokane Stress

Stress:

1. Physiology. a specific response by the body to a stimulus, as fear or pain, that disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism.
2. physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension: Worry over his job and his wife’s health put him under a great stress.
3.
a situation, occurrence, or factor causing this: The stress of being trapped in the elevator gave him a pounding headache.
???Synonyms 8. anxiety, burden, pressure, worry.

Spokane stress comes in many forms — rush hour traffic, construction detours, Spokane Road Work detours, that pending deadline at work, trying to sell your home in the failing Spokane housing market, getting the kids to the numerous Spokane sporting events in the area, and any number of other stressors. The medical definition of stress is somewhat of a hot topic. There have been many different definitions of what stress is, whether used by psychologists, medics, management consultants or others.

Hans Selye’s (one of the founding fathers of stress research) view in 1956 was that ???stress is not necessarily something bad ??? it all depends on how you take it. The stress of exhilarating, creative successful work is beneficial, while that of failure, humiliation or infection is detrimental.??? He believed that the biochemical effects of stress would be experienced regardless of whether the situation was positive or negative.

How you deal with stress will have a direct impact on how you feel both mentally and physically. Stress can raise your blood pressure, increase your heart rate in a less than positive way, and even cause hair loss. The simple, gut reaction is to go to your doctor and talk him or her into prescribing medication, which does work. However, there is a far better choice to treat your stress, that has long lasting effects, and may decrease or even eliminate your dependence on prescription medication.

Exercise and proper nutrition can have a wondrous affect on your stress level. Learning how to maximize your time to be the most efficient you can at home and work will enable you to eat better and allow time for you to dedicate to exercise and maybe even relax!
In this series of articles, we will focus on how to deal with and beat Spokane Stress with exercise and proper nutrition.

Spokane Stress Busting Secrets: 10 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that 75-90% of all doctor visits are stress-related.

On top of that list, researchers and the AIS say that every part of the body is affected by chronic stress and that stress can play an aggravating role for almost any disease.

This is frightening! So what now? We cannot possibly all become hermits to avoid or rid ourselves of all the stressors in our lives.

No one can avoid all stress, but you can counteract it’s affects by learning how to evoke the relaxation response to bring your system back into balance. So your best defense is to integrate healthy stress management and  de-stress strategies into your daily routine. Schedule a set time once or twice a day to de-stress. Your body and health will thank you down the road.

1. Meditate. 5 to 10 minutes of quiet reflection can bring some relief. If you’re having a stressful day at work, close your door and meditate or go for a quick walk to clear your mind.

2. Exercise. Thirty minutes of physical activity per day helps both body and mind. If you have an hour lunch break at the office, use half of it for a walk or a jog. Make plans with a coworker to do this a few times a week.

3. Hobbies. Take a break and do something you enjoy.

4. Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Get adequate rest, eat right, exercise, limit your use of caffeine and alcohol, and balance work and play.

5. Share your feelings. Don’t try to cope alone. Let friends and family provide support and guidance.

6. Be flexible! Whether you’re at home or at work,
arguing only increases stress. If you feel you’re right, stand your ground, but do so calmly and rationally. Be prepared to make allowances for other people’s opinions and to compromise.

7. Don’t be overly critical. Remember, everyone is unique and has his or her own virtues and shortcomings.

8. Laugh. If you’re laughing, it’s hard to hold on to stress. Your facial muscles get a natural workout that relaxes them.

9. Try Yoga or Tai Chi. Both come with benefits of stress relief, muscle tension relief, improvement in flexibility and joint mobility, while strengthening and toning muscles.

10. Get a Massage. A massage provides deep relaxation and as your muscles in your body relax, so does your overstressed mind.
